The Vampire has big ambitions for a compact RIB – most crucially, to serve as a modular “rapid deployment transporter” for professional, commercial and recreational operators alike. The boat’s open aft deck can accommodate a moveable quick-release track mounting system, capable of deploying and recovering “everything from drones to quad bikes”, the RIB’s developer, Ring Powercraft, explains.
Two versions of the Vampire exist: the first, launched in November 2021, is the VR-1050. Measuring 11m x 3m and drawing 0.5m, the VR-1050 has a payload of 1.5tonnes and a fuel capacity of 350litres, and can carry up to five persons and two jet skis. Scheduled for future launch, meanwhile, the larger VT-1250 will measure 13.5m x 3.3m and carry up to eight persons, with a payload of 4tonnes and a fuel capacity of 600litres.
“The Vampire is aimed at professional users for mission support,” Ring tells Ship & Boat International, distinguishing the new craft from its other RIB lines, which include sports, leisure and dive support boats. “It is totally modular and the vessel can be repurposed within minutes to offer a different service – for instance, crew transfer, resupply and so on.” In sea trials, the debut VT-1050 carried a pair of Tactical Watercraft (TWC) units provided by Golden Arrow Marine, though this payload could equally comprise two tenders, two quad bikes or a pair of ROVs.
The VR-1050 is powered by a single waterjet, supplied by Alamarin-Jet and fuelled by Yanmar inboard engines, though twin-waterjet configurations are an option. Running on a single waterjet, the VR-1050 can achieve a speed of 35knots. Instead of incorporating a traditional wheel and throttle, the Vampire is fitted with Ullman Dynamics’ motorbike-style Steering Bar System. By twisting the grip, the coxswain can keep both hands on the bars, enabling him/her to maintain full control of the RIB while simultaneously throttling, adjusting speed and even bracing for potentially dangerous impacts. The Steering Bar System can be operated in dual- or single-handle mode.
