The Royal Institution of Naval Architects’ chief executive, Chris Boyd, has recently returned from a visit to China where he attended the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of Harbin Engineering University. Among the events marking the occasion was a spectacular theatrical display with the theme ‘Ode to Seventy Years of Development, Chasing Light, and Sailing Away’, with a set designed to resemble the deck of an aircraft carrier.
Harbin University is home to nearly 1,200 naval architecture-related students and with numerous notable alumni, many of whom were present for the festivities, its influence spreads across the maritime community. Esteemed academic Prof. Dr Jeom Paik, RINA Fellow and vice president of our Korean branch, is currently attached to Harbin as a visiting professor.
