Shiprepair & Maintenance: April 2020Wartsila

Two cruise ships owned by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway, will be fitted with specialised Wärtsilä scrubber systems. As the vessels will run on HFO, scrubbers will be installed in order to comply with the IMO Global Sulphur Cap, which came into effect 1 January 2020. Both vessels are 325m long and require customised design by Wärtsilä due to the restricted space onboard.

Scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2020, Wärtsilä’s hybrid solutions will allow wash water to circulate from the scrubber unit to a process tank when operating in closed-loop mode. During this cleaning process, seawater is used to replenish water when necessary.

“We were confident that the team at Wärtsilä could design and engineer a sulphur emissions abatement system that could be successfully integrated into our two vessels. The VSOx scrubbers are the right choice for this project, being both efficient and the right technical solution. They will allow us to serve our customers, the environment, and society in general by meeting and exceeding the strict regulatory and environmental targets,” says Giovanni Canu, vice president, special projects and operational support, NCL.

Additionally, four new NCL cruise ships under construction will be fitted with Wärtsilä engines and scrubber systems, as part of a seven-year engine maintenance agreement the two companies share.
