Viking Life-Saving Equipment has delivered three customised versions of its Munin-S1200 craft, all kitted out to serve as mobile medical units.
The trio, handed over in August, will be operated by the Hellenic National Centre for Emergency Care (EKAB) and the Hellenic Coast Guard, who typically work together to manage patient transfers from the Greek islands to larger hospitals on the mainland. The first ambulance craft has been stationed in Naxos, an island in the Cyclades cluster.
Viking tells Ship & Boat International: “These craft are fitted with more equipment than a regular land-based ambulance.” Examples include: portable and fixed oxygen supply equipment; an automated external defibrillator; immobilisation devices; and ECG monitor; blood glucose monitoring systems; and trauma bags, to name but a few.
More commonly used for search and rescue work, the GRP-built Munin-S1200 measures 12m x 3.5m and has a range of more than 350nm at 35knots, courtesy of a 1,150litre-capacity fuel tank. The craft can achieve a top speed of 45knots when fully laden. It runs on twin Mercury Verado 400 diesels, rated 276kW apiece, and features shock-mitigating seating for patient protection and comfort.
Viking adds: “The boat operates safely up to Beaufort force 8 and at a wave height up to 4m.” Classification has been handled by RINA.
