Significant Small Ships
Significant Small Ships is an annual publication, describing in one volume, approximately 25 new vessels including fast ferries and passenger vessels, tugs and workboats, fishing, and offshore patrol etc. Each vessel description will comprise a concise technical description, extensive tabular principal particulars including major equipment suppliers, detailed general arrangement plans and a colour ship photograph.
Significant Small Ships provides a wealth of information in a readable format and is the most comprehensive publication of its kind available.
A favourite among naval architects, many contributors have told us they have found it hugely beneficial to be listed in the publication. The information and visuals provided will not be reproduced anywhere else without the consent of the participants.

Nominations
In March next year, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects will publish another issue of Significant Small Ships, its annual round-up of first-in-class, innovative and unique vessels, boats and craft sized between 1m-100m.
Published in its current form since 2000, Significant Small Ships typically collates the pictures, particulars and general arrangements of approximately 25 vessels delivered in the previous year, as selected by the Ship & Boat International editorial team. Taking in a truly global selection of designers and construction yards, previous entries have ranged from a miniature, one-man tug-training simulation module to the world’s fastest, partly LNG-fuelled, 99m loa passenger ferry. If the vessel shines on merit, there is every chance it may be included, be it a fishing vessel, pilot boat, crew transfer vessel, offshore support vessel, tug, dredger or RIB.
While we keep a lookout for possible entries throughout the year, submissions and suggestions are always welcome. Each vessel selected for Significant Small Ships features:
- A full colour picture of the vessel, on the water
- A full set of technical particulars including dimensions, engine/propulsion ratings and equipment lists
- A full-page general arrangement of the vessel
- A write-up explaining why the vessel was selected, and its areas of key importance
If you would like to nominate a vessel that fits the above size and delivery date criteria, please contact Ship & Boat International editor Martin Conway, for further details: mconway@rina.org.uk
