Significant Ships
Significant Ships is an annual publication bringing together, in a single volume, some of the most innovative and important commercial designs of vessels 100m LOA and above delivered by shipyards during the previous year.
It includes a cross-section of ship types, with each vessel being either representative of its type or singularly significant. Each ship receives a concise technical description and principal particulars, (including the major equipment suppliers), general arrangement plans and a colour photograph of the vessel.
A favourite among naval architects, many contributors have told us they have found it hugely beneficial to be listed in the publication. The information and visuals provided will not be reproduced anywhere else without the consent of the participants.

Significant Ships of 2023 is available in both printed and digital (pdf) formats. It is also available as a set with Significant Small Ships, and an extensive collection of past editions are also available.

Nominations
The Royal Institution of Naval Architects will again publish another issue of Significant Ships presenting information on technically interesting ships completed and delivered during this year. This will be part of the Institution’s successful series published every year since 1990, all compiled with the assistance of the staff of the Institution’s principal magazines, The Naval Architect.
Contents of the new edition will comprise information on up to 50 ships, generally commercial designs of approximately 100 metres length and over, delivered during the year by shipyards from around the world, and considered to have some key importance. The selection of ships will be based on design, technical, engineering, or special merit. Each of the vessels selected for Significant Ships includes a photograph (full colour) of the ship, followed by a concise technical description highlighting the key features, supported by a comprehensive tabular list, detailing technical data and a full-page general arrangement plans. There is no charge for publishing any of this information.
While we keep a lookout for possible entries throughout the year, submissions and suggestions are always welcome. Each vessel selected for Significant Ships features:
- A full colour picture of the vessel, on the water
- A full set of technical particulars including dimensions, engine/propulsion ratings and equipment lists
- A full-page general arrangement of the vessel
- A write-up explaining why the vessel was selected, and its areas of key importance
