Fellow is the highest grade within RINA.
We award Fellows to respected professionals who have demonstrated significant senior experience and achieved the highest standards in their field. It shows you have spent a career working at the forefront of the industry to help push boundaries and drive the profession forward. To hold the status of a RINA Fellow is a prestigious and internationally recognised professional qualification.

Fellow of RINA Eligibility
Who can apply?
Fellow (FRINA) without Engineering Council Registration, or if Engineering Council Registration already held
Individuals coming from a background in practical Naval Architecture and or Naval Engineering;
or
They are sector leaders, and/or have held senior roles and responsibilities within their career to date within the wider maritime industry.
These individuals either already hold Engineering Council registration, or do not wish to register.
Fellow (FRINA) with existing Engineering Council Registration
Individuals coming from a background in practical Naval Architecture and or Naval Engineering; they are sector leaders, and/or have held senior roles and responsibilities within their career to date.
Minimum years of experience
- Candidates do not need to hold MRINA as a pre-requisite to apply for FRINA
- A minimum of 5 years of Superior Responsibility, demonstrated through the various indicators of the attributes associated with senior responsibility.
Indicators associated with senior responsibility:
- Title and position in company or organisation
- Technical and administrative responsibilities
- Financial and budgetary responsibilities
- Responsibility for technical and administrative staff
- Continuing Professional Development
- Standing in the naval architecture profession or maritime industry

How do I apply or upgrade my membership to Fellow?
Option 1: Apply for Fellow without EC registration, or Fellow if EC registration already gained
- Ensure you meet the criteria listed above. Please contact our Membership Team if you aren’t sure.
- Candidates should normally be proposed by two members who are Fellows, Members or Associates, and to whom the candidate is personally known.
- Complete your Extended CV. Fellows need only detail their most recent five years of experience rather than their full professional history, however, those most recent five years must detail senior/superior experience.
- Email your extended CV alongside proposer and seconder details to Membership@rina.org.uk, or online application form
Option 2: Applying for Fellow with EC Registration
- Ensure you meet the criteria listed above. Please contact our Membership Team if you aren’t sure.
- Candidates should normally be proposed by two members who are Fellows, Members or Associates, and to whom the candidate is personally known.
- Select your Registration Route. RINA will not accept an extended CV if you are applying for Fellow alongside Engineering Council registration.
- Certified copies of your degree certificates.
- Email your extended CV alongside proposer and seconder details to Membership@rina.org.uk, or online application form
Application Proposer and Seconder:
Candidates should normally be proposed by two individuals. Ideally, these two individuals are Fellows (FRINA) or Members (MRINA), and to whom the candidate is known.
They will confirm that:
- Your application meets the requirements for MRINA / FRINA / Engineering Council registration
- The details within the Professional Review Report or CV as an accurate description of the candidate’s experience
At a minimum, the candidate must find a FRINA / MRINA member to propose requirement 1.
Where a candidate cannot find a second proposer who holds FRINA /MRINA status, RINA will accept an individual who:
- Is a Member or Fellow of another Maritime Professional Body or;
- Is professionally registered with the Engineering Council or Engineers Australia or;
- Holds a position of senior responsibility within the candidate’s place of employment
