On-Demand Cyber Security Training

RINA and Acora have developed a comprehensive program of maritime cyber security training to further your learning and education within this critical discipline.

Delivered by certified Government Certified Trainers (GCT), and subject matter experts in the field of maritime cyber security, the training includes practical examples, scenarios, simulations and where required technical demonstrations of methods of protection from our technical cyber partner Fortinet.

Delivered on-line via remote learning, there are 5 separate training modules, each providing expert education in distinct areas of maritime cyber security. Modules are available on-demand and should take approximately 4 hours to complete, all progress is saved so you can pick up where you left off.

Participants can sign up to individual modules or the entire course, and will gain formal CPD approved certificates on completion of each module. The pass mark for each module is 60% and all tests, exercises and assignments can be retaken if necessary.

Supported by industry experts

Our courses are supported by IASME who run a Maritime Cyber Baseline certification scheme with the aim to educate and support those in the maritime industry to reach a crucial minimum level of cyber security

The Maritime Cyber Baseline scheme provides an affordable and practical way for vessel owners, operators, managers and builders to improve the cyber security systems onboard their vessels and helps reduce the possibility of a cyber attack occurring. The scheme covers all vessel classifications and aligns with an organisation’s journey towards compliance with the cyber requirements set by the IMO, Port Authorities and Classification Authorities. You can find out more here.

To increase your awareness and expand your knowledge regarding the importance of a robust maritime cyber security strategy, we highly recommend you sign up for all 5 modules as your foundational knowledge and then have your vessel assessed and certified via the IASME Maritime Cyber Baseline scheme.

Topics

Module 1

MARITIME CYBER RISK MANAGEMENT AND BEST PRACTICES FOR OPTIMAL MARITIME PROTECTION

Provides a structured framework to provide owners, captains, management companies and crew assurance that cyber risks are appropriately managed and that there is both resource and process in place to detect and respond to potential cyber breaches.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the maritime risk management process, from asset identification, categorisation, risk assessment and remediation.
  2. Be in a position to conduct a per-vessel IMO/ISO 27001 compliant security risk assessment.
  3. Appreciate the relationship between risk management, incident management and liaison with external parties.

Presenters:

Steve Lucas / Mark Oakton

Module 2

IMO CYBER RESOLUTION MSC.428(98), A FRAMEWORK FOR CERTIFICATION

Motivation (Why?)

Defines a formal program for vessels, fleets and third parties to achieve and maintain formal compliance to the IMO 2021 cyber regulations.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the contents and relevance of the IMO legislation change and how it applies to maritime security
  2. Learn the fundamental tenets of security compliance and governance in preparation for a risk management strategy
  3. Identify the specific frameworks and controls that are essential to the adoption of a suitable security posture.

Presenters:

Steve Lucas / Alex Martin

Module 3

CYBER SECURITY ARCHITECTURE FOR MARITIME NETWORKS

Motivation (Why?)

This module provides an overview of the history, framework and strategies of both naval and IT architecture, and how they both must be underpinned by a common foundation… a robust cyber security architecture.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Develop an appreciation of the necessity and importance of cyber security architecture within the Maritime sector.
  2. Using the SPOLDATGOS model, take a detailed look at the main business and technical architecture areas that must be considered when designing and developing cyber security systems for maritime environments
  3. Understand how getting the basics right is fundamental to a strong cyber security posture.
  4. Discover the things to look out for right now and considerations for the future.

Presenters:

Mark Oakton and Andy W.

Module 4

CYBER SECURITY TESTING, ASSESSMENT AND THIRD-PARTY REVIEW

Motivation (Why?)

This module demonstrates how Maritime IT & OT systems can be regularly tested to ensure they are free from serious vulnerabilities. Active penetration testing and passive vulnerability assessments highlight any security weaknesses in the design or operation of a vessels systems and highlight the impact of a potential breach

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Learn how to conduct a security audit of technical and policy controls in a maritime environment.
  2. Assimilate technical appreciation of the difference between passive and active scanning, and where each is most appropriately employed.
  3. Develop and implement an ongoing surveillance and improvement plan; to ensure that the best practices identified during audits remain in place all year round

Presenters:

Alex Martin / Mark Oakton

Module 5

GLOBAL RISK MANAGEMENT & CYBER INSURANCE

Motivation (Why?)

Many organisations are unsure how to effectively protect themselves when travelling or when away from their home base, cyber threats differ in impact and likelihood depending on what location the vessel, owner or crew are located in. The range of options to respond and recover also differs widely across borders.

This module promotes a structured process for documenting threats and vulnerabilities, defining the appropriate level of both protection and response and how the security profile changes based on location and resource.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the different categories of information and how legislation mandates that personal information be controlled.
  2. Learn how to securely communicate across borders and apply appropriate encryption to data in transit and at rest.
  3. Appreciate the importance of insurance in the overall risk management strategy

Presenters:

Riz Omar / Captain John L David
