North West Branch Technical Lecture – Maritime Geospatial Data Science at Scale Presented by Alex Cattrell of Lloyd Register
With increasing geopolitical instability, understanding maritime operations is of ever-increasing value. Key to this is the Automatic Identification System (AIS), a foundational dataset for maritime analytics; however, analysing AIS data at scale presents significant challenges.
We can effectively segment and cluster data at scale by leveraging H3, a hexagonal geospatial reference system open-sourced by Uber. This approach enables unsupervised learning of over 820 billion AIS messages. Through this methodology, we can identify key maritime locations such as berths, anchorages, and dry docks and unlock insights into spatiotemporal maritime operations.
Whether you’re a student, a professional in the field, or simply passionate about data science this lecture promises to be enlightening and inspiring.
