Whitby, UK-based boatbuilder and retrofitter Parkol Marine Engineering has launched the first in a series of 10 trawler boats that it is building for various fisheries across the UK and Ireland.
The debut vessel, Sparkling Star, was ordered by first-time owner and veteran skipper/crewman James Corbett, and is set to operate in Ullapool, Scotland. Parkol director and engineering manager Andrew Oliver has attributed his company’s full order book for trawlers – which will keep Parkol occupied through to 2021 – to “plentiful fish stocks” as well as “post-Brexit optimism that the UK may regain at least some control of its waters as a result of the ongoing exit negotiations with Europe”.
Sparkling Star was produced by Parkol in tandem with Pearson Electrical, which the yard is currently commissioning for all electric wiring, maintenance and refitting work (managing director Mark Pearson is pictured in front of Sparkling Star, above right). The vessel has a gross tonnage of approximately 160tonnes, measures 19m in length overall (16.49m in registered length) and 7m in moulded breadth, and features a moulded depth of 4.06m.
Her hold can accommodate up to 650 boxes, while her ice locker area can store up to 5tonnes. Sparkling Star can also carry 10,000litres of fresh water in the fore peak and 3,800litres in the double bottom. Eight berths have been installed on board.
Power is provided by a single Mitsubishi S6R2 MPTK-F engine driving a 2.1m-diameter propeller through a Reintjes 7.09.11 reduction gearbox, while the vessel’s electrical needs are met by auxiliary Mitsubishi 6DI6 and Doosan L126TI engines.
