Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) outreach Programs play an important role in inspiring and educating the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators. Naval Architects and Engineers of the maritime sector must inspire the next generation by captivating their imagination to join the engineering efforts to build the next awe-inspiring ships. It is important that we provide a clear pathway for all future Naval Architects and Engineers to realise the opportunities that exist within our profession.
As a STEM Ambassador, we will give you the tools to engage with pupils, schools, and communities to promote STEM education and encourage young minds to explore the wonders of Engineering and Science in the maritime industry.
RINA’s Mission Statement
- To expand visibility of Naval Architecture and maritime careers in general through outreach
- Engage with local communities on a frequent basis through an enlarged and better supported STEM Ambassador base
- Demonstrate clear benefits and support available through RINA to aspiring Naval Architects
Key Aims
- To increase the number of registered STEM ambassadors at RINA
- Providing open access to a variety of different RINA STEM material & resources
- Providing the required support for RINA STEM ambassadors that enables them to spend their time where we need them most – delivering outreach and engagement within communities.
- Providing an Increased RINA presence at STEM events
- Increasing junior membership within RINA, establishing links to support those most interested in naval architecture careers

When applying via the STEM Learning website, individuals will need to provide the following details:
UK based RINA Members
- Personal information (Name, Address, date of birth)
- Employment status
- PEI membership
- Activity preference (STEM Fields)
- Age range a volunteer wishes to work with
- Groups a volunteer wishes to work with
International based RINA Members
Volunteers wishing to carry out STEM related activities outside of the UK would not be eligible to do so as part of the UK STEM programme. Funding for STEM Volunteers is only available for activities that take place within a UK school setting.
It is not possible to conduct a DBS check for members residing overseas, you must obtain a local background check or an equivalent certification in your country of residence. This step is crucial to ensure the safety and credibility of our STEM Ambassadors.
Please submit a copy of your local background check to RINA for verification purposes. Upon approval, you will receive an official RINA STEM Ambassador certificate and a welcome pack containing guidelines for effectively representing RINA.
WHO?
A background in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) is highly desirable but not mandatory but enthusiasm for STEM subjects and a willingness to learn are essential! The perfect candidate works effectively and compassionately with students of various ages and backgrounds. They are a true team player and keen to work collaboratively with other volunteers and educators.

WHAT?
As a STEM Ambassador there is a lot for you to get involved in including but not limited to:
- Classroom Presentations and Workshops:
- Deliver engaging presentations and hands-on workshops in local schools, libraries, or community centres to introduce students to STEM concepts
- Demonstrations:
- Conduct interactive experiments, demonstrations, or hands-on activities to make STEM subjects more engaging and understandable for students.
- Mentorship:
- Provide guidance and mentorship to students interested in STEM fields. This can involve offering career advice, sharing personal experiences, and helping students set goals.
- STEM Events and Fairs:
- Assist in planning and executing STEM-related events, provide support during these events and help facilitate student participation.
- Resource Development:
- Contribute to the development of educational materials, lesson plans, and activity guides for STEM programs.
- Community Engagement:
- Engage with parents and community members to raise awareness of the importance of STEM education.
- Foster partnerships with local businesses and organizations to expand program reach.
- Support Teachers:
- Collaborate with educators to enhance STEM education in schools by providing resources, sharing teaching materials, and assisting with curriculum development.
- Promote Diversity and Inclusion:
- Encourage underrepresented groups, including women and minorities, to pursue STEM education and careers.

WHEN?
The time commitment for this volunteer role may vary depending on the program’s needs and your availability. It could range from a few hours per week to more extensive involvement during STEM events and fairs. It is important to note that flexibility is a key part of the role. A flexible schedule is required to accommodate volunteer sessions, events, and workshops during both weekdays and weekends.
Registered STEM Ambassadors will be required to undertake 1 day of activity per year.
There will be a welcome and training session run by the Institution.
