Technical Meeting Wednesday 9th October 2024
Please join us for our first technical meeting in Fremantle for some time – we look to see all of
you from Fremantle, Henderson and Rockingham joining us and hopefully many of you from
the City too. No registration required this time, please just turn up – the meeting will be in-person
only, no live-streaming or recording – as all pre-covid meetings used to be – we
actually want to see you in person!
We have two excellent presentations, both of which should enhance your CPD, one on
Hydrodynamics and one on Structures – what more could you want? (well: there will be some
nibbles and the bar should be open)
The first presentation will be by Dr Tim Gourley:
Measured and modelled flow around container ships in shallow water
Container ships are the racehorses of the cargo shipping world, with fine lines designed to travel at high
speed. In this talk, we discuss a linear method (SlenderFlow) and a nonlinear method (phFlow) for
calculating flow around container ships at moderate-to-high speeds in shallow water. Wave patterns and
dynamic sinkage and trim will be discussed. Results will be compared with full-scale measurements on
container ships in the Fremantle shipping channels, and model-scale measurements on container ships in
the Duisburg towing tank.
Dr Tim Gourlay MRINA is a mathematician specializing in ship hydrodynamics. Through his company,
Perth Hydro, Tim undertakes ship motion modelling and measurements, locally and internationally. Tim’s
experience with container ships includes conducting full-scale measurements on over 40 container ships
in Hong Kong, Torres Strait, Fremantle and Napier, as well as coordinating international benchmarking
exercises on container ship motions in shallow water.
The second presentation will be by the guys from FUZE Solutions:
Composite Ingenuity
Steel repair and replacement solutions that extend asset life, reduce maintenance downtime and increase
revenue.
