Fuelling the Future: Legal & Insurance Risks in Maritime – London International Shipping Week (LISW) 2025 Session
Fuelling the Future: Legal & Insurance Risks in Maritime Session at London International Shipping Week 2025
This focused session will examine the legal and insurance implications of maritime decarbonisation, with particular attention to the use of alternative fuels and the commercial pressures surrounding vessel design, operations, and contractual arrangements. As the industry adopts low- and zero-carbon fuels, new risks are emerging that are not fully addressed by existing international liability regimes or insurance frameworks.
Presentations will highlight the position of the UK P&I Club on alternative fuels, including the new operational and pollution risks being addressed, gaps in existing conventions, and the importance of crew and salvage preparedness. The session will also explore the contractual and legal challenges of adopting alternative fuels in the charterparty context, specifically – how to allocate cost, risk, and benefit between parties, and how the absence of a dedicated compensation and liability regime is being addressed through ongoing work at the Comité Maritime International (CMI) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The session concludes with a panel discussion exploring how stakeholders can manage legal, technical, and commercial risks in the transition to alternative fuels, and the implications for naval architects and other professionals involved in ship design and operational decision-making.
