Advanced Simulation and Virtual Rebirth of SY Turbinia and RMS Mauretania

A Talk by Keith W Hutchinson

His talk will provide an insightful discussion covering the design and development of the first-ever turbine steamer, the 1894 SY Turbinia and her direct descendant, Cunard’s 1907 steam turbine propelled Blue Riband transatlantic liner RMS Mauretania.

Both the Turbinia and Mauretania now exist again as operational ships, albeit virtually, on the state-of-the-art Ship Simulator at South Shields Marine School. The mathematical modelling and detailed graphical representation of the Turbinia and Mauretania will be discussed along with the capabilities of the Ship Simulator itself. The ‘virtual’ SY Turbinia and RMS Mauretania will be presented to show the realism of current simulation and, of course, the performance of both record breaking ships, which will hopefully encourage others as to the benefits of the realistic simulation of historic ships and hence ‘bringing them back to life’ for the current generation.
